Hmmm, frustrating. My achilles is still causing me to limp and hurts rather a lot. Good job we intended today as a rest day. We went shopping in Quorn, which is 66kms away, but has a proper supermarket, which we've been gagging for a bit. Not having muesli in the morning is not good! We spent a bit of time hanging out, getting to know Quorn (which isn't related to the mycoprotein meat-alternative product, but IS named after the same small town in Leicestershire as the yummy fungus food). They do make Quornish pasties there though, which I thought was a rather cute pun (even if they are yucky meat).
We browsed a second hand bookshop, had lunch (for Lily: a vegetarian railway sleeper - 3 pieces of toast lined up and covered in cheese, pineapple and asparagus. Y-U-M! For Tim: a turkey and cranberry foccacia. Yum again, even though it's turkey, you can't beat a bit of cranberry sauce, I say!), got some fuel and a gas bottle refill and drove back to Hawker.
The afternoon was given over to study and writing followed by dinner at The Old Ghan restaurant. The Ghan is a transcontinental train that runs from Adelaide to Darwin (rather like the Orient Express in style). There are a couple of towns in this area that were led to believe would be stopping points for the Ghan but it was re-routed and the towns were left with hotels and pubs with no customers. Hawker did at least have the Ghan come through until 1956. And there was a commuter train that ran from Hawker to Quorn until 1970 (called The Old Coffee Pot, for reasons unexplained). The station has been a restaurant since the early 90s and did a great job of feeding us tonight!
We're going to find a new camp site tomorrow and spend another day (or more, but hopefully not) resting my achilles. Let's have some global finger crossing that my stoopid foot is better when I wake up!
